  • What is Perlite?
    Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous rock that expands 4 to 20 times its original size when rapidly heated to approximately 950 °C. In reality, expanded perlite is a "popped rock" that is inert, lightweight, sterile, permanent, incombustible, asbestos-free, non-toxic, rot and vermin proof and has a neutral pH.
  • What elements are found in perlite?
    Typical elemental analyses show that perlite contains silicon, aluminum, potassium, sodium combined with oxygen and other trace elements. Each perlite ore deposit has separate and distinct ratios of these mixed glassy silicate which explains why certain deposits are better for specific applications.
  • What are the usage areas?
    Foundry, steel casting, agricultural and horticultural purpose, landscaping, construction, lightweight concrete, mortals, plasters, fabric dying and washing, insulation of cryogenic tanks, filtration of liquids, in fertilizer production, ceramic industry, glass industry, dynamite production, human and animal health drugs, in pesticides, cosmetics industry, in cleaning powders. It plays an important role in oil, water and geothermal drilling (as an additive facilitating the cementing process), coating and insulation of ship bottoms (caulk pastes), in removing water pollution caused by oil residues or other oily wastes (especially in the seas), preventing water loss by evaporation in dam lakes, cities, open water reservoirs, as a filling material in packaging, as a filler and additive to plastic foam and plates, inexpensive and light plastic as a filler in furniture making (Garden chair and table), as an insulation layer against fire, especially in steel constructions..etc.

  • What industrial applications benefit from perlite?
    Perlite is used as a filler, extender and texturizing agent in numerous products. It displaces expensive resins and reduces unit weights. Perlite's filler applications include caulks, textures, joint and taping compounds, paints, polishes, hand cleaners and explosives. Additional uses include filtration, waste water treatment, oil clean-up, sludge solidification, exothermic toppings, slag treatment, insulating refractories, low density well drilling mud, foundry core and molds, formed products, shipping dunnage and adsorbent.
  • What is the Early history of perlite?
    There are reports of early investigations being carried out in Japan in 1929. In the mid to late 1930's, many people were working in America to find uses for the material. In 1938, experiments were started in Superior Arizona by L. Lee Boyer, who later in that year made an application for a patent for a process to expand perlite and convert it to an insulating or refractory material. The World War brought a temporary halt to the industry's development until the late 1940's and early 50's when work progressed in the USA and Holland.
  • What are the health effects of perlite?
    Perlite has been characterized as a nuisance or inert dust. Exposure to such dusts can sometimes result in temporary physical irritation, discomfort, impaired visibility, and enhancement of accidental potential, but not to health impairment. Perlite poses no significant respiratory health risk to workers or to consumers.
  • What are the key physical and chemical properties of high-quality industrial perlite?
    High-quality industrial perlite is characterized by its high silicon dioxide (SiO2) content, typically between 70-75%, which ensures structural stability during expansion. Key physical parameters include a low moisture content (loss on ignition < 5%) and a well-defined crude particle size distribution. For expanded perlite, the most critical factors are ultra-light bulk density (ranging from 40 to 150 kg/m³ depending on the application), high thermal resistance (up to 1260°C), and a neutral pH (6.5–7.5).
  • How do you ensure quality consistency in bulk perlite shipments?
    Quality consistency in bulk shipments is achieved through strict multi-stage quality control (QC) protocols. This includes testing raw ore samples at the quarry site, monitoring thermal expansion ratios during processing, and conducting final sieve analyses prior to packaging.   • Why is coarse perlite preferred over fine perlite in commercial horticulture and hydroponics?
    Coarse perlite (typically 2-4 mm or 4-8 mm) is highly preferred in commercial horticulture because it maximizes the Air-to-Water Ratio within the growing media. Large particles create stable, macro-porous structures that prevent soil compaction, ensuring excellent root aeration and rapid drainage. Fine perlite tends to pack too tightly, which can lead to waterlogging and root rot.

  • What makes perlite an excellent material for cryogenic and high-temperature insulation?
    Perlite’s exceptional insulation performance stems from its unique cellular structure. When expanded, it forms countless microscopic, sealed air cells that drastically reduce thermal conductivity. In cryogenic applications (below -100°C), it prevents heat leaks efficiently in LNG or liquid nitrogen tanks. At high temperatures, it remains chemically inert and retains structural integrity exceeding 1000°C.
